Go Ask Alice by Anonymous

White Rabbit
By: G. Slick
One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small,
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all.
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall.
And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall,
Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call.
Call Alice
When she was just small.
When the men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low.
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know.
When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead,
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's "off with her head!"
Remember what the dormouse said:
"Feed your head. Feed your head. Feed your head"

I wasn't planning on doing this as a blog entry, but imagine my surprise when I was researching my independent reading book and I found out that Beatrice Sparks/the editors created the title of Go Ask Alice by using the lyrics from the song "White Rabbit" by Grace Slick. This song was actually influenced by the book Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. I didn't know about this before, until now, that Alice in Wonderland refered to drugs at some points in the story. For example, when she took pills to get bigger/smaller. I had no clue that Alice in Wonderland made references to drugs, but now that I think about it, it all makes sense.

When I listened to the song, and read the lyrics, the connection between the story and the song was clear. In the song, they talk about how the drugs affected Alice, and how her movement had slowed down, and her "logic and proportion" have died. This relates to the book because, even though the "author" isn't called Alice, many people refer to the author as Alice, and both "Alices" are doing drugs, and they can't control it.

I finished Go Ask Alice. But there's only one more thing I'd like to say: People have been recommending this book to me since 7th grade, but I've never had the chance to read it, so when I saw this book on the Independent Book List, I immediately decided that this was the year that I was going to read it. I picked up the book, and as soon as I started, I don't know why, but I felt bored. The book didn't seem authentic. It felt fake, even though Beatrice Sparks says its true with some fictional events in it. I don't know what's wrong with me. Maybe it's the fact that I can't ever picture myself or any of my friends taking drugs, so I can't picture anybody else doing drugs, even though I know that many other people do. Yes, the book's plot was interesting, and the character really made me feel really sorry for her. I loved AND hated the ending (<- i don't know if that made sense, but whatever) I think that the reason for this is because as time when on, my "idea" of how great the book was just started getting bigger and bigger. I think that I overestimated the book, because I pictured the book to be "mind-blowing," but it just wasn't like that for me. ehhh. . .

Your blog was really descriptive and interesting to read. I have the movie Alice in Wonderland and from reading your blog i was amazed to find out that it inspired a song which inspired the author to create your reading book. I can relate to you, when you said that you cant imagine people taking drugs even though they are, because you and your friends don't. I also believe in your thoughts. Overall, great blog entry :)

Liz, you are so right. I can't beleive. I reas Go Ask Alice when I was in the 8th grade and I never thought of any real connection. Plus, I never really thought that Alice In Wonderland was about drugs. I heard that the guy who wrote it was high on drugs when he wrote it. I watched it when I was a little kid and of course didn't notice. But now, everything, from the centipede smoking to the guy deeping the saucer in his cup of tea. It really is about drugs. I can't believe it. I'm real disappointed in the movie now. Thanks for telling me, Lizzie.

I love your blog! This entry is so creative! I never really knew there was a connection but when I read your post I realized it. I recently read " Go Ask Alice" (can't underline) and it amazed me that it was somewhat based on a real story. It's really amazing how this scene from Alice in Wonderland influenced the author in writing this book. Great job!:)

♥Hi Liz♥
I find it very interesting that there is a connection between the book, the song and "Alice in Wonderland". I read "Alice in Wonderland" and I remember that Alice had used those pills so she could get into the tunnel. I like your blog post and I wish I could finish the books as fast as you do!

Love your little clip. It was really a different approach of you to think of Alice in Wonderland because your making a connection with something else. It's a good way of looking at things. Good work.

Hey Elizabeth! I have to agree with Stephanie. How do you make such HUGE BIG HUMONGOUS posts like this? It's like HUGE! It's amazing! I like how you found the song and put two and two together and found out that the author got the title "Go Ask Alice" from the song. I find it very cute.

Unfortunely, that's what happens to books that people recommend. That tell you to read it, and when you do, all your high expectations of it, go down down in the drain. At least you didn't give up on the book Liz, be proud (: I'm really suprised that the title, Go, Ask Alice, is really derived from the song in Alice in Wonderland. It interesting, and a little odd that a children's film actually refers to drug...It's reminding me of the song Puff the Magic Dragon. haha <3

Too bad you didn't like it, i loved it when i read it. I loved the video that you put on your blog and the story about how you found out where they found the name for the book and i always wondered where they got the name Alice, since it was an anonymous person who sent it their diary...i think im babbling, i dont know, but anyway your blog is so creative, its awesome =)

heyy elizabeth!! Go ask alice is a great book and i read it last year and i own it haha...that is really interesting about Alice in Wonderland, ive also read that book and own it and think its amazing. About the ending its sad that instead of her staying better she dies but idk to emphasize the point of the book i think its good. And since Lewis Carroll was on LSD when he wrote Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, the connection between the boks does make sense. About the drugs thing....i have known people who took drugs so its not as hard for me to understand it, but i never have and never will especially after this book.

OMG Liz! Your blog is AMAZING!!! You put so much work into each entry. I can't believe Go Ask Alice is actually named after a song from Alice in Wonderland. Isn't it weird that some innocent things can be related to adult-ish things that people write? I mean, Alice in Wonderland is like a cute, innocent story about a girl who fell down a rabbit hole, but now it's related to Go Ask Alice, a book about a girl on drugs. I never read Go Ask Alice, but I'm planning to. I read the lyrics of the song and I can see the relationship between the book and the song. It's kinda weird... it's like the song has an underlying meaning now that I think about it. I can't wait to see the rest of your posts!!! <3

I like your blog a lot because i feel that drugs do change a person completely. People sometimes do not stop and think about whats going to happen to then if they do drugs. Its not going to make someone cool. It makes then seem stupid.

Hey elizabeth. Its Carol. I love your blog. Woah. I agree with Stephanie. Your blog posts are super long. I like how you actually listened to the song and made a connection to it. The song lycris are pretty deep and have to do with drugs. You mention that Alice in Wondeerland has connections with this song, does that mean that Alice from wonderland was on drugs or something like that?
p.s. thank you for the comment you left on my page.

Wow Elizabeth. I read that book too. My friend had recommended to me this book in 8th but instead I read Lolita. Anyway, on my blog, I refer to Alica in Wonderland too. I was soooo surprised too! I had the movie in VCR and I would watch it when I was little and I would be confused. Now, I understand the whole concept of the movie and that song. I think that Alice In Wonderland shouldn't be a kid's movie since it relates to drugs. Also, I think that your blog is sooooo amazing. You wrote soo much more than me. lol. I should've put the song lyrics on mine. Also the bright lime green hurts my eyes a little >.< but it's okay! I can just highlight. And me too, just like Edith, I have friends who take drugs. I knew a girl who wouldn't stop and sometimes she came to school high. I really do feel sorry for those kind of people. Okay, now I'm just ranting. Sorry! I love your blog. And you're so cool. This is Karen from Science Research, the one who is weird and talks to Jodi (AKA MOJOJOJO). :D
